Hi Mamas! I have been overwhelmed with questions lately involving the current formula shortage. First of all, if you are a parent who is suffering because of this shortage--reach out to me and I will keep my eyes open for the type of formula you need. It is heartbreaking to me that this is happening...because it shouldn't be. Second, I am not a doctor--don't want to be, don't claim to be. ALWAYS talk to your child's pediatrician before you make any drastic changes.
I saw a pediatrician post a TikTok the other day (@thepedipals on Instagram and TikTok) and she had some great advice...I also feel like she is my kind of people because she kept it very real. PLEASE whatever you do, DO NOT water down your current formula to make it last longer. This is very dangerous because babies (especially younger than 9 months old) aren't able to filter large amounts of water through their little systems until closer to a year old. PLEASE do not make your own formula...just no. Goat's milk, camel milk, and raw cow's milk...STAY AWAY.
This whole shortage really just infuriates me. This is America--there should NEVER be a formula shortage for our babies...NEVER. Ok, now that I got that out of the way, There are so many local Facebook pages that are offering to find formula for those that are in need. Which is wonderful, and for the most part, people are being good humans and are doing what they said they would do; most not even charging parents in need for formula purchased. But, be careful--there are (like everything else) scams out there, and people ghosting people. Its sad, but this is the world we live in.
I'd also like to point out the ASTONISHING number of posts I've seen where people (mostly mothers) who are shaming other moms who use formula in the first place. Y'all. THIS. IS. NOT. OK. EVER. Is breastfeeding preferred by most doctors/pediatricians? Yes. Is breastfeeding easy for everyone? NO. Breastfeeding is work...and if you tell me it came easy for you, that's great, but for the vast majority that's not the case. I tried to breastfeed my first baby. I just couldn't make enough to keep up with her needs. It would take me days to get just one ounce. I tried EVERYTHING, for 6 weeks to boost my supply and nothing worked. With our second, I tried to exclusively pump. Same thing. I couldn't make enough. It was heartbreaking to me, because as a mother you feel like this is what you're supposed to be able to do with no issues, and then you can't. I say all that say, if you can't say anything nice, then don't say anything at all. Be positive and encouraging to mothers who going through this. Formula feeding is not an easy way out. It's still work and now it's even more work searching, hoping, and praying you can find what your baby needs.
Lastly, talk to your pediatrician before trying a bunch of different formulas. So many babies are having tummy issues from having to switch so much. I know its easier said than done, but try and stick to the same ingredients their little tummies are used to unless otherwise directed by your doctor to do differently. Many stores have "generic" brands of name brand formulas usually at a lower price. Check the ingredients, or visit your specific formula website and see if they have a comparison. Here is one I found for different brands of Similac.
Try not to stress...which is easier said than done. I know its hard. Being a mom is hard enough without all of these other issues to deal with. Remember, give yourself some grace, and take a deep breath. Tomorrow is another day.
I love you,
Leah
